Curling Success for Heriot-Watt Student

Caitlin Barr Wins the Scottish Junior Ladies Curling Championships

On Sunday 7th February Caitlin Barr, a second year Actuarial Mathematics and statistics student and Sports Scholar at Heriot-Watt University, followed in her sisters footsteps by winning the Scottish Junior Ladies Curling Championships held in Aberdeen.

Ranked in third place going into the week long event, the team played well in the early matches coming through the round robin format with a win to loss ratio of 5:2. This sent them into the semi final’s where they met Helen King and her team. After nine ends they won the match six one to proceed to the final.

Despite loosing the first two stones in the final they fought back well, to lead the match six three going into the tenth end. With time running out their opponents, skipped by Jennifer Dodds, could not make up the deficit and had to forfeit the end and subsequently the game… leaving Caitlin and her team mates to pick up the top prize.

The successful team comprises of Caitlin – who in addition to support from Heriot-Watt University also receives support from the East of Scotland Institute of Sport - Tasha Aitken (Glasgow School of Arts), Claire McDonald (Glasgow Caledonian University) and Lauren Gray (University of Glasgow) who play lead, second, third and skip respectively. In addition to being crowned Scottish Junior champions, the team will head out to Flims in Switzerland on the 6th March to compete in the World Junior Curling Championships.

Speaking about the success, Caitlin said "It is a fantastic feeling to have won this tournament. Everyone on the team played well throughout and we hope that our form can continue into the World Championships in March. We know that the competition will be strong but we will give it our best and see what happens"
